Dr. Rasheed Draman, Executive Director of the African Center for Parliamentary Affairs (ACEPA), has praised Ghanaians for their maturity in the country’s political system, following the National Democratic Congress’s (NDC) landslide victory in the 2024 elections.
The NDC’s candidate, John Mahama, secured 6,328,397 votes (56.55% of valid votes), defeating the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who garnered 4,657,304 votes (41.61%).
The NDC also won a majority in parliament, securing over 180 seats, including key constituencies traditionally held by the NPP.
Speaking on Morning Starr with Naa Dedei Tettey, Dr. Draman stated that the victory demonstrates that Ghanaian voters are sophisticated and will hold their leaders accountable.
He noted that the electorates have shown that they will not tolerate poor governance, as evidenced by the NPP’s defeat.
Dr. Draman emphasised that the 2024 election marks a pivotal moment for Ghana’s democracy, where the power of the voters is evident in shaping the country’s political future.
He said, “What it [2024 election] says about Ghanaian electorates, number one is that voters are not fools; that’s the first lesson I took away in terms of the Ghanaian electorates and number 2, our voting system has now become sophisticated. the two parties have both suffered humiliating defeats at the hands of the electorates.”
