Doctors at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in the Ashanti region have commenced strike action over issues of accommodation.

This comes on the back of an eviction notice served over 20 senior specialists and consultants leaving the Danyame residential area has taken effect.

In 2022, the government allocated approximately 400 acres of government lands in the Ridge Nhyeaso and Danyame areas of Kumasi to the Kumasi Traditional Council, who serve as custodians of the land originally acquired by colonial masters.

As of now, new cases are not being attended to by the doctors.

The reason behind this strike action is the eviction of over 20 senior specialists and consultants residing in the Danyame residential area.

In an interview with Starr News the Public Relations Officer of KATH, Kwame Frimpong explained that the move is to get the issues with the accommodation of the dictors resolved.

“After the doctors informed management about issues concerning their accommodation, we have spoken to the Regional Coordinating Council, Lands Commission, and Danyame Redevelopment Committee. The assurance is that no doctor will be evicted without being given accommodation elsewhere.

“Some of the doctors complained that the redevelopers had cut their water and electricity supply, and the Regional Ministers and the Lands Commission have assured them they would deal with any redeveloper who will cause inconvenience for the doctors,” Mr. Frimpong narrated.

He continued: ”We’ve told the doctors that given the assurance we’ve been given by the Regional Coordinating Council and the Lands Commission, it is important that they rescind their decision to strike. They have indicated that they will for the time being continue to take care of patients on admission while further engaging with their leadership.

“The Hospital Management will this afternoon hold a meeting with the RCC, Lands Commission, Danyame Redevelopment Council, and the Doctors and we’re sure the issues will be resolved for doctors to resume full work.”
