I must express some frustration that has been brewing within me, and I feel compelled to share it with you.
When God created the Ghanaian did he not add an iota of a sense of maintenance? Let me not blame this on God lest I blaspheme.
Last Friday, we shed light on the state of disrepair of our country’s Independence monument, completed in 1961. It’s disheartening to witness such neglect, especially when it’s glaringly evident to authorities. We drive past it every day. This situation is far from acceptable.
Yet, this is an iconic location where many visitors come to capture memories, proudly declaring their presence in Ghana. The likes of the US Vice President Kamala Harris visited the place last year.
If anyone dares to claim that the authorities are unaware, I would boldly assert that such a person lacks reverence for accountability.
It’s a blatant disregard for truth akin to the tale of Pinocchio.
This area is deemed one of the safest in Accra, with security personnel guarding it around the clock. So why haven’t they sounded the alarm to address these pressing concerns?
A section of the fence is crumbling, and one can’t help but wonder if we’re waiting for a ruinous collapse before action is taken. I drove past the area just this Tuesday, only to find several lights malfunctioning. The once majestic fountain lies dormant, leaving us to ponder when was the last time it danced with flowing water.
As the proverb goes, a stitch in time saves nine. If you share my sentiments, then join me in urging for action with #FixIndependenceSquare.
It is the season of making promises, we don’t want another promise. Just fix it now!
