Sammy Gyamfi, the National Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has condemned the Ghana Police Service for detaining activist Ralph St Williams, claiming that the move was influenced by the government.
In a strong statement on X, Mr. Gyamfi accused the Police of acting under the “dictates of the despotic Akufo-Addo/Bawumia government,” following Williams’ revelation of what he termed as a “useless hole dug by the corrupt NPP government.”
“Just when we thought the Ghana Police Service is beginning to wean itself off the dictates of the despotic Akufo-Addo/Bawumia government, they decided to arrest comrade Ralph St Williams for exposing the useless hole dug by the corrupt NPP government for ‘God’, at a staggering cost of $58 million USD,” Mr. Gyamfi voiced.
He raised concerns about the status of the project, which has now become a “swimming pool,” and why this should be hidden from the public despite the use of taxpayer funds. “Why should the status of that hole, now turned swimming pool, be kept a secret from the people whose taxes were wasted on same?” he questioned.
Mr. Gyamfi further criticized the Police for allegedly being used to suppress government critics, stating that it is improper for them to serve as tools of intimidation. “How long will the Ghana Police Service allow themselves to be used for the suppression and harassment of critics of this corrupt NPP government?” he asked.
He ended his message by advocating for Ralph St Williams to be celebrated for his courage rather than being detained. “Ralph should be commended and not arrested. #FreeRalph,” Mr.Gyamfi asserted.
This statement comes amid growing concerns from opposition leaders and activists over the perceived misuse of state security to clamp down on free speech and political opposition. The Ghana Police Service is yet to address these allegations.
