Maradona Adjei Yeboah, widely known as Guru NKZ, has officially been reinstated into the University of Ghana’s Student Representative Council (SRC) presidential race. This follows a successful petition filed by the artist and his legal team after his earlier disqualification from the race.

Guru’s disqualification was based on Article 30 of the SRC constitution, which mandates that all presidential candidates must be campus residents and eligible to contest for a Junior Common Room (JCR) position within their hall. During the vetting process, both Guru and his running mate, Jeffery Adu Yeboah, admitted that they were non-resident students, leading to their immediate disqualification.

In response, Guru’s legal team lodged a formal petition with both the SRC Electoral Commission and the Office of the Dean of Student Affairs. They also filed an interim injunction with the Judicial Board, calling for a temporary halt to the electoral process until a proper hearing could be conducted.

On September 15, 2024, the Appeals Board ruled in favor of Guru, overturning his disqualification with a unanimous 7-0 decision. The board instructed that Guru and his running mate’s names be added to the official list of SRC presidential candidates.

The ruling paves the way for Guru’s participation in the election, with balloting for all vetted candidates set to take place on Monday, September 16, 2024.

Guru’s return to the race has generated a wave of excitement on campus, with many anticipating a competitive election season as the Hiplife icon now stands among the candidates vying for the top student leadership position at the University of Ghana.
