Social media influencers and a section of the Ghanaian public have gathered in Accra to protest against illegal mining also known as galamsey and the release of Democracy Hub protesters.

The protestors embarking on a three-day exercise, started at Legon, Okponglo Traffic Light, continued to the Airport Traffic Light, then proceeded to the National Service Secretariat, the Electoral Commission Office, and Parliament, before concluding at Independence Square.

Social media influencer Kaly Jay has joined the protest, urging swift action to combat illegal mining (galamsey) and secure the release of detained citizens.

The demonstration, which drew supporters from diverse groups, focused on two critical demands: “Stop galamsey now” and “Free the citizens.” Kaly Jay stressed that, “I feel they’ve [#StopGalamseyNow Protesters] not been treated right so I am here to advocate for their freedom.”

In an interview with GH One TV, on October 3, 2024, Kaly Jay stressed the severe environmental damage caused by galamsey, noting, “Based on research, as of 2021, 60% of our water bodies have been destroyed, and six major rivers have been affected.”

Ghanaians cry out for clean water. They pour out their grief over the effects of galamsey and how it is already affecting the nation with water bodies and forest reserves destroyed.

Organizers promised to continue pressing for change until their demands are met.
