The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Kingsford Bagbin has adjourned parliament once again due to the failure of the NPP Members of Parliament to attend the session on Thursday, November 7 at the Accra International Conference Centre.
The office of the Speaker of Parliament released a statement calling for the resumption of parliament. This follows the indefinite adjournment of parliamentary proceedings on October 22, 2024.
The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin announced the indefinite adjournment of parliament due to the exchanges between lawmakers from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) regarding which caucus held the Majority.
In a released statement dated October 31, Parliament is set to reconvene on November 7, 2024, at 10 am in the Grand Arena, Accra International Conference Centre.
Although the recall of parliament was initiated by the NPP Caucus, they failed to attend the session.
Addressing the House, Speaker Bagbin expressed disappointment over the situation, highlighting that their absence would stall proceedings.
Mr. Bagbin further highlighted that the House lacked the necessary quorum to conduct business due to the absence of New Patriotic Party (NPP) Members of Parliament (MPs).
“Matters that they wanted us to handle, which I admitted for consideration from the business committee, are not on the Order Paper and in fact, there is no order paper for today because the business committee could not meet due to the absence of the people who requested for the recall.
“As you can see one side of the House is completely empty. In view of this, we have a quorum to sit but we have no business before us to transact. In the absence of that, there is no other authority that can put business before you that you have not adopted to transact,” Mr. Bagbin stated.
He continued: “In view of the failure of the business committee to sit, as a result of the refusal of those who requested a recall to show up, we are compelled to once again adjourn the sitting of the house. Knowing the challenges we are facing, it is not advisable to be adjourning from day to day. So, I will proceed once more to adjourn the meeting indefinitely”.
