President Akufo-Addo had no genuine intention to construct a national cathedral, it was just a mere attempt to siphon state funds. Deputy spokesperson of the NDC’s 2024 campaign, Beatrice Anann has said.
Speaking on Morning Starr with Naa Dedei Tettey on Thursday, November 28, Madama Annan stated that President Akufo-Addo’s attempt to build the national cathedral was never borne from good intentions, but deceit.
“I think that they never intended to build a cathedral…” she said. “You know that the president has a way of pleasing people around him…” she added, noting that the national cathedral attempt was never an act to fulfill a promise.
“This is a president that knew that the project would cost 312 million dollars from inception….and kept lying to us that they were just providing seed capital…and kept adding on…” She said this, indicating how the government has blown over 58 million dollars on a pit.
Speaking on the fate of the cathedral site, Beatrice explained that the next NDC government will not continue the project. And that the space will be used for a 500-bed special medical facility for children. “Many people are saying that we should use it for a children’s hospital, and I will advocate for that”, she asserted.
President Akufo-Addo in 2020 informed Ghanaians of a national cathedral project which he intended to construct as a thanksgiving token to God Almighty.
“I made a pledge to almighty God that He was gracious enough to grant my party, the NPP, and I victory in the 2016 elections after two unsuccessful attempts, so I will help build a cathedral to his glory and honour,” President Nana Akufo-Addo said at the sod-cutting ceremony in 2020.
Madam Annan added that the future NDC government will deploy the ‘Operation Recover All Loot’ (ORAL) principle to retrieve all these monies and demand accountability from anyone who steals from the public purse.
