John Dramani Mahama

Flag bearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Mahama has criticized the government’s highly publicized ‘Year of Roads’ initiative, saying it has not addressed the deplorable state of roads in many parts of the country.

Speaking during a community engagement at Enchi in the Aowin constituency on his campaign tour of Western North Region, Mr. Mahama stated that almost very traditional ruler in almost every region he has visited decried the bad state of roads in their respective jurisdictions.

He emphasized that the initiative has been ineffective because the government had failed to ensure good management of roads that were constructed during his tenure.

“I’ve traveled across the country and this [Western North Region] is the thirteenth region. Everywhere I’ve been, there have been poor road networks and the chiefs have been complaining. Every year they say “year of roads,” “year of roads,” but there are no roads.

“Even the good ones we left, they have been unable to maintain them,” Mr. Mahama bitterly lamented.

In 2019, President Akufo-Addo declared the following year would be the “year of roads”. Subsequently, then Minister of Roads, Kwasi Amoako Atta revealed that this year was to be the ‘year of completion’ during which highways and road construction started during the period would be completed.
