Operation Vanguard has arrested four (4) Chinese nationals and one (1) Ghanaian suspected to be illegal miners in the Amenfi Central District of the Western Region on 21 May 2018.
The Chinese nationals were apprehended on a mining site together with their Ghanaian counterpart, but other miners working with them reportedly escaped.
The team seized one locally manufactured single barrel gun with three ammunition and destroyed two water pumping machines.
According to Public Relations Officer of the Task Force, Squadron Leader Robinson Omane-Agyei, the suspects have been handed over to the Manso Central Police station pending further investigations.
“We arrested four Chinese and a Ghanaian who were engaged in illegal mining and they had two excavators, single barrel gun and water pumping machine in their possession. And you wonder how they got access. I will entreat Ghanaians to help government so that it can regularize the mining sector so that mining can be done in a more sustainable way”.
