The Dambai Magistrate Court has sentenced Lydia Dotse, 39, a farmer from Agavey and Mawuli Nyajor, 30, a fisherman from Agage in the Krachi West District of Volta region to 12 months each into prison.
Both pleaded guilty for two count of charges, the first charge was conspiracy to commit crime contrary to section 23 (1) of the criminal offence Act 29/60, and Human trafficking Act 2005 (Act 694) as amended by human trafficking Act 2009 (284).
According to the Prosecutor Inspector Robert Dokponu, on the 11th October, 2017 a complainant John Nutakor, Assembly Member for Gyane-krom Electoral Area brought the victim Gameli Adukpo, 8, to the Kete-Krachi Police Station and reported that on 10th October, 2017 in the evening he spotted the victim in his area and when interrogated he told him that, he the victim was given to Mawuli Nyajor for fishing exploitation by his mother Lydia Dotse for a monthly fee of GH¢100.00 and that because the man was maltreating him, he escaped from him.
The police sent the victim to Village of life Orphanage which belongs to Partners Community Development (PACODEP) at Kete-Krachi.
The man and the woman were later arrested and detained when both came to the police station demanding that the child should be released to them.
He also stated that, Mawuli admitted the offence and said the victim was given to him by his mother for fishing exploitation and that every month he will give her an amount of GH¢100.00 as per their agreement.
The woman also admitted the offence that she gave the victim to him and every two years he has to pay GH¢300.00 which he has already paid GH¢100.00. Madam Dotse was therefore asked to serve 12 months at the Ho Municipal Female Prisons and Mawuli is to serve 12 months jail term at Kpando Prisons to serve as deterrent to others.
The Project Coordinator of PACODEP, George Achibrah Jnr., in an interview said the jailing of the two would serve as a deterrent to others who are trafficking children.
