Investigators from the Homicide Unit of the Ghana Police Service have been deployed to the Northern region to takeover investigations into a Sunday evening fatal attack on residents of Najong in the Bunkprugu Yunyoo district, regional police commander DCOP Patrick Adusei Sarpong has revealed.
Four persons died in that attack as eight gunmen who arrived on motorbikes opened fire on traders at a market place before targeting a crowd sitting under an NPP pavilion.
Nine were injured, five critically, including two women and were being treated at two separate health centres at Bindi and Nalerigu.
The gunmen fled after the assault leaving the district security council scrambling to establish calm by deploying police and military forces to the area.
The incident happened just days after another unknown gunmen killed six persons on Thursday dawn at Kalampor in the East Gonja district over chieftaincy issue.
DCOP Sarpong at a news briefing Monday, December 11, 2017 disclosed that the police high command had taken up the matter and were deploying intelligence personnel to unravel what triggered the attacks.
“As we speak now we have deployed the police and military to the area and headquarters have given assistance by asking the Homicide Unit of the CID headquarters to come down and assist us in this investigations,” he said.
The commander has appealed to civilians keeping fire arms to hand them over to the security services.
In a related development, the police chief also hinted the national command had again taken over another case where six persons were intercepted transporting pump action guns and dozens of cartridge to Namong in the Yunyoo constituency where tensions over creation of a new district is escalating.
The suspects have been identified as Haruna Issah, 30, Jabut Nwoyo 37, Danso Suuk 30, Taiku Kwabena 30, Frank Fuseini 42 and Tahiru Ayariga 55.
Taiku has claimed ownership of the weapons, according to DCOP Sarpong.
