Referendum: Ras Mubarak was totally out of order – Ephson

Pollster Ben Ephson says MP for Kumbungu Ras Mubarak was out of order for initially breaking ranks with the NDC over the upcoming referendum on local level elections.

“Ras Mubarak was totally out of order because his party had taken a decision and so he must follow it. He could have still stood by his position and he’d have faced the consequences,” Ephson told Morning Starr host Francis Abban Tuesday.

Mr. Mubarak in an interview with Starr News said while he respected the decision by the NDC to back a ‘No vote’ he disagreed with it.

“Certainly the NDC as a political party has some challenges with aspects of the bill which we have made clear. I respect the party’s position but I completely disagree with the party that we should be advocating for a ‘No’ vote at the referendum. My position for a ‘Yes’ vote is hinged on the fact there is political party involvement in the elections anyway. In every part of the district there is hardly any assemblyman or woman who is not tacitly on one political party or the other, go the assemblies and check. we shouldn’t play ostritch in the election of assemblymen and women is concerned,” he told Starr News Ibrahim Alhassan.

However, following threats of sanction by the party, the MP in a turnaround declared support for the party’s position.

“I recognize that my personal position must be subsumed under the broader interest of the party. I have therefore decided to uphold the party’s position for a NO vote on the matter,” he wrote in a statement.
