VDF calls for investigations into unprofessional conducts at Ho Teaching Hospital

The Volta Development Forum (VDF), has called on the management of the Ho Teaching Hospital in the Volta region to investigate allegations of unprofessional conduct and medical negligence against some of its staff.

The VDF in a press statement issued and signed by its Executive Director, Daniel Agboka-Dzegede revealed that it had received several complaints of staff of the hospital abusing, intimidating and insulting patients who visit the facility for medical care.

According to the Forum, it is concerned about the reports and called on the management of the hospital to launch an investigation into to issues so as to save the image and reputation of the hospital.

“We are concerned about the reported gross disrespect and inhumane treatment meted out to the sick by men and women trained with the taxpayer’s money to save precious lives.”

“Throwing away professional virtues and values by the health officials at the facility does not only put vulnerable lives at risk but derails the gains made thus far, in providing quality health care delivery in the Volta region, as well as impacting negatively on Ghana’s quest towards the achievement of Goal 3 of the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals hinged on access to quality health care for all,” the statement added.

While calling certain reforms at the facility, the VDF also urged management not to allow inexperienced health practitioners such as students to undertake “major or delicate surgeries on any patient, especially pregnant women during cs.”

Mr. Agboka-Dzegede further called on the management of the hospital to ensure that, “the facilities at the covid cases isolation center should be properly maintained and be friendly and conducive to patients. We also understand the conditions there are not up to standard and could become the center of Covid rather than treatment.”

Management’s response

But in a swift counter-response, the Ho Teaching Hospital has indicated that, “the Board and Management have initiated the processes of investigating all the concerns raised in the press statement.”

“Additionally, the Board acknowledges that there may be weaknesses in the systems instituted and has initiated the process to assess the system and work towards exceeding the expectations of all our clients,” the statement added.

The release signed by Amos Jah, the Public Relations Officer of the hospital, went further the say, “We humbly appeal to our cherished clients/stakeholders not to hesitate to approach Management for a redress of their concerns when the established systems fail to address their concerns relating to our services,” while assuring the public of the hospital’s commitment to quality and safe healthcare, which is of its core values.
