The Assin North Member of Parliament, James Gyakye Quayson, has stated that he is resolute and working as Member of Parliament (MP) for his Constituency.

According to him, despite all the accusations being level against him he is “in very high spirits.”

“An innocent person has nothing to fear,” he added during his interview with the media in Parliamentary.

Mr. Gyakye Quayson further noted that he is “conducting his parliamentary duties” even as there are issues in court.

“I am not going to any extent to own up any information to you. All I will say to you is that, the matter is in court,” the Assin North MP reiterated.

Background

The High Court in Accra has issued a criminal summons against the Member of Parliament for Assin North over his alleged criminal offence.

James Gyakye Quayson, who has been a subject matter of criminal charges including perjury has been invading service.

The embattled MP has been the subject of court action, with the issuance of a criminal summons against him in the course of the week.

He is facing charges of deceit of public officer, forgery of passport or travel certificates, knowingly making a false statutory declaration, perjury and false declaration for office.

However, The National Democratic Congress (NDC) Minority in Parliament has expressed concern with what it describes as a blatant disregard of Privileges of Parliament.

The Minority narrated in a statement that during the sitting of the House Tuesday, 8th February, 2022, it emerged that a bailiff from the Registry of the Supreme Court had made an attempt to effect service of a court process on the James Gyakye Quayson in his office in Parliament.

“This is the first time in the history of Ghana that such a flagrant disregard of the privileges of Parliament and breach of the Constitution has taken place,” the Minority Leader, Haruna Iddrisu stated.

He continued “We applaud the justices of the Supreme Court for upholding the fidelity of the law by pointing out to the desperate lawyers of the NPP the brazenly unconstitutional nature of the attempt to serve a sitting MP on the precincts of Parliament. We urge the Court to continue to uphold the sanctity of the Constitution.”
