The caterers of Ghana’s School Feeding Program are calling for the government to provide a realistic amount per pupil to ensure nutritious meals. According to recent statements, the current allocation of 1.20 GHS per pupil is insufficient to prepare quality food, leading to substandard meals being served in schools.
Dorothy Oforisapong, spokesperson for the school feeding caterers in the Ashanti region, highlighted the financial challenges they face. suggesting that an increase to 2 GHS per pupil would make a significant difference. She emphasized that while caterers aim to prepare good food, their efforts are hampered by the limited budget. She stated “The money involved is not good.”
An Auditor General’s report uncovered serious issues with food quality in schools, including the use of mouldy corn dough and meals lacking protein. The report noted that “For instance, at the Anshrenyin DA Basic School, we observed in the presence of the Western Regional Coordinator and the caterer that the cooks prepared jollof without any protein contrary to the requirements in the National Operations Manual.”
Oforisapong also defended the caterers, stating that they use the best ingredients available within their budget constraints. She urged the government to provide better funding so that they can prepare more nutritious meals.she explained”We use tomatoes, we use pepper, we use onions, we use fish. Just that you don’t get chicken or meat or anything.”
Food safety concerns were also raised, with reports of caterers using unwholesome ingredients due to budget constraints.She acknowledged that some caterers might resort for cheaper, lower-quality ingredients out of necessity. Oforisapong said”Icannot deny it, but I have always used good ingredients for my cooking.”
light of these issues, the caterers are appealing to the government for a realistic budget to ensure that all children receive safe, nutritious meals. Mrs Oforisapong stated that “These are all things we are lamenting. And so they should hear us and do the needful.”
