Nana Owiredu Wadie I, the Nkosuohene of Kwahu Nkwatia, has donated GHC 100,000 to the Eastern Regional Secretariat of the National Peace Council (NPC) to support its efforts in promoting peace ahead of the December 7 Presidential and Parliamentary elections.

The NPC, an independent statutory body, is tasked with preventing, managing, and resolving conflicts to build sustainable peace.

However, it has been facing financial and logistical challenges that have hindered its operations.

Professor Mark Boadu, the Eastern Regional Chairman of the Peace Council, acknowledged the organization’s successes in implementing strategic capacity-building programs but stressed the financial constraints currently affecting its work.

“The council is often held back by few constraints notably financial and logistical. Contrary to the common belief that the Peace Council is rich, I wish to say it has never been so. The council is not a paid institution,” he said, adding that only the executive officers receive monthly salaries. “The Council is not a paid institution. We are not paid but the Executive officers working there are paid monthly”.

Nana Owiredu Wadie I, who also serves as a Peace Ambassador, underscored the importance of peace for national development as the motivation behind his generous contribution.

He made the announcement during the celebration of International Peace Day in Koforidua, where he was the guest speaker.

The event, themed “Cultivating a Culture of Peace through Music and Arts in Promoting Peaceful Elections, 2024,” focused on the role of music and arts in fostering peace leading up to the elections. In a speech delivered on his behalf by Nana Opoku Amankwah II, the Kyidomhene of Kwahu Nkwatia, Nana Owiredu Wadie I, emphasized the transformative power of music and arts in promoting peace with a call to leverage it for peace building .

John Appiah Bafuor, the Eastern Regional Director of the Electoral Commission, also addressed attendees, reaffirming the Commission’s commitment to ensuring free, fair, and peaceful elections.

He assured participants that issues concerning irregularities in the provisional voters’ register had been resolved, with the final register to be submitted by the Revise Officer, a judge, on September 20, 2024.

The program ended with acknowledgement and honour of Kabaka Foundation, Nana Owiredu Wadie I, and some individuals for their continues support to the activities of National Peace Council.
