The National Peace Council has revealed it is working behind the scenes to address the issue involving protesters who were arrested by the police during a demonstration over the weekend.

In a brief statement, the peace council was well aware of the development and assured the public that it was in touch with key stakeholders in finding an amicable solution to the matter.

“We take the opportunity to assure all Ghanaians that our commitment to safeguarding peace, justice and the well-being of every Ghanaian remain unwavering,” the statement said.

Scores of protesters who took to the 37 roundabout in Accra from Saturday through to Monday, 21st September, 2024 have been arrested by the police. Many of them have been processed for court.

Following the arrests, the Ghana Police Service while criticizing the Democracy Hub group, labelled its actions during the staged event as “unGhanaian, uncivil and unlawful”.

The pressure group have been protesting against the scourge of illegal mining and its devastating impact on the country’s natural resources, demanding that government takes urgent steps to curb the menace.

Conspicuously absent from court is a leading member of the group, Oliver Barker-Vormawor who police say is on admission in a hospital.

Meanwhile, lawyers for the arrested protesters have accused the police of maltreating their clients by subjecting them to indignity.
