An Independent Parliamentary Candidate for the Adentan Constituency, Hagar Asiedu has expressed her frustration over the constant monetary demands she faces from voters during her campaign rounds. According to her, these demands pose a huge challenge to her in her bid to represent constituents in the next Parliament.
Speaking on the Campaign Trail segment of Starr Today hoted by Joshua Kojo Mensah and Tutuwaa Danso, she questioned the basis for such expectations from voters.
“A lot of the voters demand money each and every day whenever that I go out for campaign. So it’s a bit challenging,” she lamented.
“Wherever that you go, people have that perception that so far as you are contesting as a member of parliament, like there should be some amount of cash on you,” she remarked.
Hagar explained that she chose to run as an independent candidate because of the financial constraints that often come with contesting through the two major political parties.
“My strength is not up to there, so I decided to contest as independent. Sometimes, it’s very difficult for the two major political parties to give you the chance if you don’t have the resources. So that’s why I decided to go as independent.”
“We all know that our two major political parties, they’ve involved a lot of money into politics. So now if you don’t have the resources, it’s very difficult for you to be even known in your constituency,” she noted.
While she has already started her campaign, Hagar remains discreet about her source of funding, only saying, “I can’t disclose that yet.”
Addressing rumours of her personal life, she clarified that she was misquoted regarding alleged affairs with multiple men. “It was a conversation about the challenges women in politics face,” she explained.
