Anyone seeking the presidency or running mate should undergo a mental fitness test – Sam George

As political tensions rise, Ningo-Prampram MP Sam George has addressed criticisms surrounding the passed anti-gay bill, by directing strong remarks at the NPP’s vice-presidential candidate, Matthew Opoku-Prempeh. His comments come ahead of a planned protest in support of the bill.

Supporters of the Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, also known as the anti-gay bill, are holding a protest today, Tuesday, October 8, to voice their dissatisfaction with the delays in the bill’s final approval. The demonstration seeks to urge the president to promptly sign the bill, which has been pending since it was passed by Parliament on February 28.

During an interview on GHOne TV State of Affairs show on October 7, 2024, Sam George dismissed claims that the bill is being pushed solely by the NDC, emphasizing its bipartisan backing. “This bill was passed by 275 members of Parliament, 138 from the NPP and 137 from the NDC. It’s a national cause, not just about the NDC,” he explained.

The bill has fueled intense debate, leading to accusations from the NPP that NDC members, including Samuel Okudjeto Ablakwa, previously endorsed the Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE) curriculum. Sam George refuted these claims, clarifying that Ablakwa had no involvement in basic education during that period.

He suggested that the NPP vice-presidential candidate, Matthew Opoku-Prempeh, might need a mental fitness test. “After watching his recent speeches, I am inclined to believe that anyone seeking the presidency or running mate should undergo a mental fitness test. It appears the good doctor may not have all his nuts properly screwed on,” he remarked.

When questioned about the fairness of such comments, he defended his position, arguing that it was necessary to call out what he saw as “foolishness.” “Every fortnight, it seems there’s an effusion of foolishness. If someone is being foolish, you must tell them they are being foolish,” he added.

He also criticized Opoku-Prempeh for previously supporting CSE, pointing out that the NPP candidate had publicly thanked UNESCO in 2019 for introducing the curriculum. “I have a video I can share with you to play for your viewers. Matthew Opoku Prempeh was wearing a blue suit, thanking UNESCO for introducing CSE into the curriculum. He said it was time for us to get modern and understand modern sexual training. He was the recipient of $28 million for the introduction of CSE. How can he forget that he received $28 million? How can he forget that he wore a blue suit and thanked UNESCO for bringing ministers of education from four regions of Africa?” Mr. George questioned.
