Minister for Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Stephen Asamoah Boateng, has urged the residents of Bawku to remain united, emphasizing the need to refrain from politicizing the ongoing conflict in the area.
Speaking to the media on Tuesday, October 29, Mr. Boateng reaffirmed the government’s dedication to restoring peace and order in Bawku, which has been marred by unresolved Chieftaincy and ethnic conflicts.
Mr. Asamoah Boateng’s appeal comes at a very crucial time as there are heightened security concerns in the area, following a devastating incident on Sunday, October 27, 2024, when travelers were attacked and killed by armed men on the Bolgatanga-Tamale highway near Gbimsi.
Eight lives were claimed during the attack as travelers were interrogated about their identities before being killed. Two vehicles were also set on fire during the attack.
During the address, the minister pledged to the townspeople that the government is working closely with the relevant authorities to ensure that they address the issue at hand.
Mr. Asamoah Boateng assured residents that the government, through his ministry and collaboration with other relevant bodies, is committed to working impartially with all parties involved.
He further appealed to the traditional leaders in the region to avoid actions that could heighten the conflict.
“I will implore all sides to stop the conspiracy theories going around and the blame games and keep calm and allow the government to deal with the security and chieftaincy issues therefore. No one should play politics with this sensitive matter and I will continue to engage my colleagues in the political arena from all sides to work with the government to resolve the current problems and work towards lasting peace in the area.
“I strongly call on the traditional leaders from both sides to refrain from any act that will escalate the situation.”
