The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Babgbin says despite the challenges in Parliament he works hard to have the Executive’s business done successfully.

This comes on the back of the Supreme Court dismissing the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin’s application to set aside its orders staying the ruling that declared four seats vacant on October 17, 2024.

According to the Apex Court, the grounds of Speaker, Alban Bagbin’s application for the Apex Court to set aside its Order on October 18, 2024, has no merit.

The Supreme Court further stated that it would be a misapplication and misinformation for the applicant (Speaker) to say that the Supreme Court has no jurisdiction.

Addressing the media, the Speaker of Parliament emphasized his role in balancing the national interest while accommodating government requests.

“To work without a majority party in Parliament, but with an evenly divided Parliament. Decision-making has therefore not been smooth sailing.  As the Speaker of Parliament, I hold the balance in favour of the national interest, but sometimes bend backward to accede to Government requests because Government has been given the mandate to govern.”

Mr. Babgbin further stated the importance of procedural rules and engagement, noting that the newly established Board of the Parliamentary Service and the newly adopted Standing Orders of Parliament are designed to handle the difficulty of the situation.

According to him, these rules aim to ensure that Parliament can function effectively.
