Danny Jordaan, the president of the South African Football Association (SAFA), was taken into custody on Wednesday after it was alleged that he had embezzled the organization’s money for his own benefit.
The arrest follows allegations that Jordaan misappropriated SAFA’s resources for personal gain between 2014 and 2018, which were discovered during a police raid on SAFA’s premises in March.
These include engaging a public relations firm and hiring a private security service to protect him, both of which were done without the SAFA board’s consent.
Jordaan, a key figure in South Africa’s 2010 World Cup hosting, sought a court injunction to prevent his arrest, but his case is not set to be heard until Thursday.
Meanwhile, Jordaan, SAFA’s chief financial officer, Gronie Hluyo, and businessman Trevor Neethling are also facing charges.
The three individuals are scheduled to appear in court today, with Jordaan denying any wrongdoing and claiming his innocence in his legal submission.
