The National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, has urged party executives and supporters to remain modest in their celebrations following the NDC’s victory in the 2024 elections.

John Dramani Mahama, the NDC flagbearer, secured a decisive victory with 6,328,397 votes, representing 56.55% of the total vote. His main rival, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), garnered 4,657,304 votes, accounting for 41.61%.

Out of the 11,191,422 total valid votes cast and a voter turnout of 60.9%, Mahama won in 13 of the 16 regions, while Bawumia triumphed in three. The regions won by the NDC include Bono East, Central, Greater Accra, Northern, Oti, Savannah, Upper East, Upper West, Volta, Western, and Western North, while the NPP secured victories in the Eastern, North East, and Northern regions.

Speaking at the President-elect’s office ahead of Mahama’s official address, Nketiah thanked party supporters and highlighted the NDC’s unprecedented mobilization effort.

Nketiah emphasised the importance of humility in celebration, stating that Ghanaians have given the NDC a mandate to accomplish national reconstruction.

He advised party supporters to cut short their celebrations and begin planning seriously to rescue the country.

Nketiah said, “I believe today is the day of President John Dramani Mahama. There will be no long speeches. I just came to thank all of you and the foot soldiers of this party. The party has never seen this level of total mobilization to fight for a purpose, and at long last, the battle has ended. The great elephant has been slaughtered mercilessly.”

He added, “Let me advise that we should be modest in our celebration, because I can almost feel the weight of the responsibilities on our shoulders. Ghanaians have given us this mandate to rebuild the nation, and we must not disappoint them. In the coming weeks, let’s cut our celebrations and begin planning seriously for the national reconstruction ahead.”

Nketiah’s remarks come as the party prepares for the crucial work of governance, with a focus on addressing the challenges facing the country.
