Supporters of the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) have decended on the Weija collation centre following suspicions of irregularities by Electoral Commission officials.
Police subsequently moved to restore calm and order at the collation centre for the Weija-Gbawe constituency.
Reports indicate that officials plan to move to the Greater Accra Regional Collation Centre to continue to process of validation.
This development comes after Jerry Ahmed Shaib, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) parliamentary candidate, was declared the winner in the Weija-Gbawe constituency.
The NDC parliamentary candidate for the area, Felix Odartey Lamptey who was at the centre revealed that they had got wind of certain questionable activities at the centre which triggered their rush to the place.
“When we got here yesterday, we came to meet some infractions about this electoral process. We know before declaration of results, collation sheets are filled, the summary sheet will be filled and declaration sheet will be signed by agents. But we came here and we saw the [EC] district officer and other colleagues filling some portions of the form so we had to confront them and find out,” he told Gh One.
Mr. Odartey Lamptey explained that it did not add up that the collation sheets were being filled when results had already been declared.
Member of Parliament for Domeabra-Obom constituency, Sophia Akuacku, who was also present at the collation centre noted that certain actions had raised eyebrows about the process. She said the NDC side suspected that the Electoral Commission officials were tampering with election figures.
“After the declaration, everybody went home. But we took our pink sheets back to our regional office to go through but when we go there we realised that the results that were declared were not accurate so we sent somebody here to come and pick the collation sheets.
“When he got here he realized that the returning officer and EC official were inside filling a form so the person raised alarm,” she narrated.
She added that they were getting ready to go to the Electoral Commission regional collation centre to continue the validation.
