The Minister-designate for Foreign Affairs, Okudzeto Ablakwah says non-performing ambassadors and high commissioners under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will reshuffled.
At his vetting before the Parliamentary Appointments Committee today, the minister-designate emphasized his plan to reform the ministry’s operations by introducing Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to hold ambassadors and high commissioners accountable through a new delivery department.
Ablakwah explained that Ghana’s foreign policy must adapt to the evolving global landscape, where reliance on aid, loans, and external support is no longer sufficient. He emphasized the importance of economic diplomacy, stating that ambassadors and high commissioners must go beyond ceremonial roles.
Under the new approach, diplomatic missions will be expected to actively contribute to Ghana’s economic development. Ablakwah underscored that performance will be measured, with clear goals tied to tangible outcomes for the nation.
“I’ll introduce a delivery department at the Foreign Affairs Ministry. I want us to give clear KPIs to our ambassadors and high commissioners. In our current global ecosystem, we can’t rely on aide, loans, and other countries”.
“In our current global ecosystem, we can’t rely on aid, loans, and other countries. Let’s aggressively pursue economic diplomacy. We don’t send ambassadors just to attend events but rather to bring something home that will impact lives. With these KPIs in place, if we don’t see clear benefits within a year, there will be a reshuffling”.
