Students with special needs in the Volta region specifically in Akatsi are receiving support through the dedication of volunteers by the Japan Overseas Cooperation Volunteers under JICA.
In a mission to uplift and empower students who have long been overlooked, Asuka Haga, a dedicated volunteer under the Japan Overseas Cooperation Volunteers is transforming the lives of students with special needs, particularly those with hearing impairments.
By using innovative methods and her expertise in sign language, she bridges the communication gap, offering students with hearing impairments a chance to thrive academically and socially.
But even with Asuka’s tireless work, challenges remain.
Stella Sogbor, the headmistress of Akatsi Demonstration school, is rallying support from a the government and stakeholders to provide logistical assistance to deprived schools like the Akatsi Demonstration school.
While volunteers like Asuka are making a significant impact, the need for systemic change is undeniable.
Since 1977, JICA has dispatched more than 1,600 JC volunteers in Ghana in over 47 years. Currently 43 volunteers work in different parts of the country.
They work in various sectors including education, health, agriculture, private sector development, and sports.
