President John Mahama has charged the newly sworn in Inspector-General of Police (IGP), COP Christian Tetteh Yohuno to take measures to weed out corruption within the police service.
He emphasized that restoring public trust requires decisive action as the service is perceived to be one of the most corrupt institutions in the country.
Speaking at the swearing-in ceremony at the Presidency on Friday, March 14 2025, President Mahama reminded the IGP that his role goes beyond maintaining law and order.
According to him, it also includes eliminating corruption and ensuring accountability within the service to enhance its credibility and effectiveness.
“Mr. IGP, your role will also involve rooting out corruption within the service. Corruption in law enforcement undermines justice and weakens public confidence in our security agencies.
“It is crucial that all forms of unethical behavior from bribery to the abuse of power are decisively dealt with. We must build a service that is respected both locally and internationally for its professionalism and integrity,” President Mahama stated.
Additionally, President Mahama also reminded IGP Christian Yohunu of the rising need to address welfare and other critical issues affecting police personnel, and tasked him to resolve these concerns to improve overall service delivery.
COP Christian Tetteh Yohunu succeeds Dr. George Akufo Dampare as IGP, who served for four-years following his appointment by the previous NPP government in 2021.
With 40 years of service, COP Yohuno is expected to lead the modernization and transformation of the Ghana Police Service.
