The Ashanti Regional Anti-Galamsey Taskforce has seized and dismantled several pieces of mining equipment in operations conducted along the Pra River in New Edubiase.
The task force, operating under the directive of Ashanti Regional Minister Dr. Frank Amoakohene, included personnel from National Security, the Ghana Police Service, the Minerals Commission, and the Environmental Protection Agency.
The operation was led by Acting Ashanti regional Security Coordinator, Captain (Rtd) John Kwame Jabari.
During the exercise, the team seized seven excavators, demobilized five others, and confiscated two generators, two motorbikes, pump-action guns, and various other mining tools. The seized equipment was transported to the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council (ARCC) for further action.
The operation forms part of the government’s continued efforts to protect Ghana’s river bodies and forest reserves, which have been severely impacted by illegal mining activities.
Illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey, has led to widespread environmental destruction, including the pollution of major water bodies and deforestation.
Dr. Amoakohene reiterated the government’s commitment to eradicating illegal mining and restoring the country’s natural resources. “The fight against galamsey remains a top priority. Our water bodies, farmlands, and forests must be safeguarded for future generations. We will continue to intensify these operations and ensure that those engaging in illegal mining face the full force of the law,” he stated.
The government has been ramping up its anti-galamsey initiatives through the deployment of task forces, surveillance operations, and policy interventions. However, illegal mining remains a persistent challenge, with operators often returning to sites after enforcement actions.
Captain John Kwame Jabari is urging local communities within the mining districts to collaborate with security agencies by reporting illegal mining activities in their areas.
Meanwhile, the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council is expected to work closely with relevant agencies to process the confiscated equipment and take legal action against offenders.
The crackdown in New Edubiase adds to a series of nationwide efforts aimed at restoring Ghana’s water bodies and ensuring sustainable mining practices across the country.
