President John Mahama is set to finally end the Youth Employment Agency’s contract with Zoomlion Ghana Limited after investigative journalist, Mannaseh Azure Awuni, petitioned the presidency over impropriety.

In a petition forwarded to the president in April 2025, Mannaseh raised concerns over Zoomlion’s actions regarding the number of personnel it had engaged in waste management.

He also claimed that the company billed the government for 45,000 workers despite the fact that most sweepers had stopped working.

Manasseh proposed that the Zoomlion contract be terminated so the District Assemblies are allowed to directly supervise the sweepers.

Responding to the ace journalist on Wednesday 11th June, 2025, the president’s secretary, Dr. Callistus Mahama, said the government had decided not to renew the contract.

Among other measures to remedy the situation, the letter issued on behalf of the president pledged to increase how much sweepers take home.

“Expiration of Contract: The contract between Youth Employment Agency (YEA) and Zoomlion Ghana Limited (“Zoomlion”) has expired and will not be renewed.”

The statement continued: “With probable cost savings, the government intends to increase the sweeper fees to a more liveable income.”

The president also assured of government’s preparedness to conduct a review of other contracts Zoomlion had undertaken including the fumigation of some major markets during the Covid-19 era.

Before he shared the news on social media, Manasseh took a victory lap in a post, saying he had “received one of the best pieces of news” of his journalism career.
