Building Ghana’s future starts with the environment – Buz Stop Boys President

Heneba Kwadwo Safo urges Ghanaians to prioritise environmental care for national growth

Heneba Kwadwo Safo, the President of Buz Stop Boys, has explained the inspiration to launch a volunteer initiative, despite his educational qualification.

In an interview on Morning Starr with Naa Dedei Tettey on Tuesday, June 24, Mr. Safo emphasized that for him, shaping a better future starts with taking care of our environment.

He highlighted that the essence of life is directly tied to the environment, adding that everything we hope to build for the future, and for generations to come, depends on it.

He pointed out that the environment is the bedrock of existence, and without it, the very purpose of life is undermined.

Mr. Safo argued that if Ghana genuinely wants to progress and create a resilient community along with a thriving economy, environmental protection must be a priority.

“The Principle of life starts from the environment. In fact, as a matter of fact, everything that we want to build for our future and those who come after us is all being done on the environment. It is the only subject that as soon as you take out of the equation of life, it defeats the purpose of life. So, if indeed we want to build a nation and leave a stronger people, a stronger economy for those who come after us, then we can’t exempt the environment from the equation. They say a healthy nation is a wealthy nation, and it’s true.”

He also expressed his concerns about the deterioration of environmental awareness over the years, reminiscing that Accra was significantly cleaner back in the early 1990s.

He attributed this decline to modernization, which he feels has led to neglecting good environmental habits.

Mr. Safo recalled that during the 90s, Accra’s cleanliness was paramount. He said, “If you sit back and you watch, you could realize that somewhere in 1992, 1993, the history of Accra in terms of cleanliness was better. But as we progress in the name of technology, in the name of modernization, rather, we are becoming too filthy.”

“And I see and I can perfectly understand that is because we no longer put in those measures back in the days where, I remember those times on a 37 stretch, if somebody in the troski should throw a litter out, they stop the whole troski and whoever did that, or sometimes they get to punish everybody in there because you watched and you didn’t say anything. It looks like with time, we are giving up on those good practices in the name of we are becoming too modernized.”

Buz Stop Boys is a group of young volunteers committed to cleaning public spaces and fostering environmental awareness in Ghana.

Through their ongoing activism on social media, they’ve been instrumental in changing how people view littering and the serious problems caused by clogged gutters, which can often lead to flooding.
