Chief Executive Officer of the Chamber of Construction, Emmanuel Cherry, says President John Dramani Mahama’s assurance to settle outstanding payments has brought renewed hope to contractors across the country.
Speaking in an interview with Emmanuel Agyabeng on GHToday on GHOne TV on July 8, 2025, Mr. Cherry said the long wait for payments since January had severely affected their operations, leading to stalled projects and financial strain on many construction firms.
“This is long overdue, and in fact, this has pushed some joy within our spine, as we speak today, because at least there is something that we can anchor our hopes on, coming from the first gentleman of the land in person of the president,” he said.
He explained that it is normal for new governments to conduct audits before releasing funds, but the delay created fear and uncertainty among industry players, especially as there was no definite timeline for the payments to resume.
Mr. Cherry emphasised that if the president’s promise materialises this month, it will not only revive their sector but also boost the overall economy and improve infrastructure development nationwide. He noted that the construction industry is linked to multiple other sectors, including manufacturing and services, and any progress in payments would stimulate broad economic activity.
“The entire economy will start a rebound. A lot of rich nations within all the sectors will see a boost. The service sector will see a boost. And then a lot of infrastructure will start seeing a flip, which is going to bring a lot of hope,” he said.
He further urged contractors to remain patient as they await the fulfilment of the president’s assurance, adding that the chamber will continue to engage government to ensure the promise is honoured to restore confidence and stability within the industry.
