A member of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), Kwame Jantuah, has questioned the leadership qualities of former Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, suggesting he risks being only a flag bearer and never becoming president.
Speaking on GHToday on GHOne TV with Lily Mohammed on Monday, July 22, Mr. Jantuah reacted to recent comments by former Majority Leader Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) wants a presidential candidate and not just a flag bearer.
“If the NPP is going to win, they’ll win on two things: unity and confidence, where the people see they are ready,” Jantuah stated.
He wondered if Mr. Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu’s comments implied that Dr. Bawumia’s loss in the 2024 presidential election was due to President Akufo-Addo, noting, “Because he says we want the presidential candidate. But it was Vice President Bawumia who stood as flag bearer and lost face on the ballot. Yes. And lost miserably, dwindled the NPP party that today they are struggling to find their feet.”
Mr. Jantuah stressed that Dr. Bawumia should have shown stronger leadership after winning the party’s flag bearer slot, calling all contenders together to project unity.
“If he likes the beauty of going around and waving, he think that’s what Ghanaians are looking for? Then he’ll be a flag bearer and never be a presidential candidate. And they’ll come to eat their own words,” he warned.
He urged the NPP to listen to diverse voices within and outside the party, noting that Ghanaians are observing their conduct both in parliament and national discourse.
According to him, the “scepter of Akufo-Addo still hangs over the party,” and it will not be easy for them to erase his influence, especially when the former president was absent from the recent national conference, despite being out of the country.
