Minister for Sports and Recreation, Hon. Kofi Iddie Adams, has extended warm congratulations to the Black Queens of Ghana for their heroic performance in the semi-final of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

Speaking on behalf of the Government and the Ministry of Sports and Recreation, Hon. Adams praised the team for their resilience and determination, after they took host nation Morocco through 120 minutes of intense football before bowing out in a penalty shootout.

“I commend the Black Queens for their courageous performance. Taking the hosts through 120 minutes of spirited football and contesting the result on penalties reflects both your determination and your commitment to the national cause,” the Minister stated.

Though Ghana narrowly missed out on a place in the final, Hon. Adams emphasized that the Queens had succeeded in restoring national pride and reasserting Ghana’s place in elite women’s football on the continent.

“Although the result did not fall our way, you have reminded the continent that Ghanaian women’s football is a force to reckon with. Ghana is proud of what you have achieved; you have shown that our women’s football is once again competing at the highest level,” he added.

Looking ahead to the third-place match against defending champions South Africa, the Minister encouraged the team to remain focused and united, urging them to finish the tournament on a high.

“As you prepare for the third-place match, carry the same belief and unity onto the pitch, knowing that your country stands firmly beside you. This campaign marks the beginning of a new chapter and we look forward to the successes that lie ahead,” he noted.

Hon. Adams also extended heartfelt appreciation to the Ghanaian supporters who traveled to back the team.

“Travelling at personal cost and standing firm in a challenging atmosphere, you created a pocket of Ghanaian energy in the stands and carried the team to the final whistle. Your commitment did not go unnoticed.”

He further reiterated the Ministry’s continued support for the team, assuring the public that all necessary resources would be provided to ensure a strong finish to the campaign.

“Let us build on the positives and complete the tournament with purpose. You have earned our respect. Now, let us finish on a high note,” Hon. Adams concluded.

The Black Queens will face South Africa in the third-place playoff as they aim to secure a bronze medal and end their impressive WAFCON run on a winning note.
