The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has announced plans to introduce a minimum wage structure for players in the Ghana Premier League after approval by the Executive Council (EXCO).
The move is aimed at ensuring fair compensation for footballers and addressing long-standing concerns about poor wages for players in the domestic league, which has led to a massive departure of players from the league.
Speaking on Starr FM on the Starr Sports Digest with Benjamin Yamoah, Communications Director at the GFA, Henry Asante Twum, confirmed the initiative as part of broader reforms to professionalize and improve player welfare in the country’s top-flight league.
“GFA will introduce minimum wage structure for players in the Ghana Premier League after it was approved by EXCO” said Asante Twum.
It aligns with the GFA’s ongoing efforts to raise standards in the local game, boost player motivation, and retain talent within the Ghanaian league system.

This proposed wage structure is expected to set a baseline salary threshold for clubs, helping to create a more competitive and professional environment for footballers across the country.
Once it has been approved by the Executive Council, the policy will take be presented to the next Congress of the FA ahead of the upcoming 2025/26 Ghana Premier League season.
