The Accra Circuit Court has convicted eight men for their roles in violent disturbances that marred the Ablekuma North parliamentary re-run.
Presided over by His Honour Isaac Addo, the court ordered each convict to pay a fine of 500 penalty units (equivalent to GH¢6,000) or, in default, serve 24 months in prison.
The convicts — Mohammed Abubakari, Tijani Mahmudu, Prince Dzakpasu, Anas Mohammed, Mohammed Hamda, Darko Otibu Samuel, Musah Muntari, and Ali Saeed (alias Bomba) — all pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit assault and three counts of assault under the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29).
Prosecutors told the court that the group attacked three individuals at the Methodist Church Polling Station: former Minister of State and ex-Awutu Senya East MP, Hawa Mavis Koomson; trader Majeed Mohammed Saana; and Chris Lloyd Nii Kwei, Deputy Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
The assaults, captured in viral videos, sparked public outrage and heightened calls for accountability in election-related violence.
The case, which opened on August 26, was expedited after the accused admitted their involvement, leading to swift convictions.
The Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA) welcomed the judgment, describing it as a crucial step toward reinforcing accountability and strengthening Ghana’s democratic process.
