Minister of Communications, Samuel Nartey George, has expressed confidence that the people of Akwatia will elect Bernard Bediako Baidoo as their next Member of Parliament.

In an interview with Starr 103.5 FM, the Minister said Bernard Bediako, the NDC Parliamentary candidate who is second on the ballot paper, has already proven his ability to lobby for development even before being sworn into Parliament.

According to him, interventions such as the provision of ICT equipment to some Senior High Schools and the resolution of network challenges at Akyem Topreman are proof of Bernard Bediako’s access to government.

“We did a few church services today. At the point in time, one of the church services I attend to, I asked, ‘is this a church service or a rally?’ Because it was NDC song ‘Sepere Sepere’ that the church was dancing to. And what hit me was, Mahama B3y3 and so we’re confident that the development that Akwatia needs will come to them with lawyer Bernard as their member of parliament. Come next week, when you hopefully be or when parliament resumes and he’s sworn in, we’ll work with him to bring development.”

Sam George said the NDC government, led by John Dramani Mahama, is committed to bringing Akwatia its fair share of development, including improved roads and infrastructure.

“When roads are fixed, or when ICT equipment are supplied to schools, nobody asks if you’re NDC or NPP before you benefit. That’s the difference between John Mahama’s government and the NPP,” he noted.

Responding to accusation by the NPP that, the NDC is embarking on developmental projects to buy votes, Sam George partied the claims and described the NPP as a National Problem.

“That’s the problem of the NPP. That’s why I said that the NPP is our national problem party. They are the national problem of our country. And the earlier we keep driving them out, the better for all of us and for development. So, last minute road buying, I don’t see that. I see a responsive government. And you see, it just shows you, in seven months, eight months of the NDC government and the good work we’re doing. Akwatia had failed to get its fair share because they didn’t have a good rep who was able to ask and make the demands. In how many weeks of Lawyer Bernard, he’s been able to knock on doors, even without getting the mandate yet”.

He further argued that even critics of the government have admitted that in just eight months, President Mahama has “ticked all the boxes.”

The Communications Minister accused the NPP of neglecting Akwatia in their eight years in government, hence the underdevelopment.

Both NDC and NPP are rounding up their campaign activities with rallies and campaign walk on Sunday ahead of the September 2 by-election.

The by-election follows the sudden passing of the area’s Member of Parliament, Ernest Yaw Kumi. The contest will feature Solomon Kwame Asumadu of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Bediako Baidoo Esq of the NDC, and Owusu Patrick of the Liberal People’s Party (LPG).
