The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has announced that Ghana will fully reopen its embassy in Tehran, Iran, following months of closure due to escalating regional hostilities.
Presenting the Ministry’s performance report at the Government Accountability Series in Accra, Mr. Ablakwa said the decision comes after the successful evacuation of 17 Ghanaian citizens from the Middle East during the recent conflict between Iran and Israel.
“Through our missions, I can announce that after three months of closure of our Embassy in Iran, we shall fully reopen,” the Minister stated.
The reopening, he explained, underscores government’s commitment to maintaining diplomatic engagement in volatile regions while safeguarding the welfare of Ghanaian nationals abroad.
Ghana and Iran first established formal diplomatic relations in 1974, but Ghana closed its embassy in Tehran in 1981, primarily for economic reasons. The mission was later reopened in 2008 and relocated to a new site in Zafaranieh in 2018.
In June 2025, the government again shut down the Tehran mission as a precautionary measure following heightened hostilities between Iran and Israel. Officials explained that the closure was necessary to protect both diplomatic staff and Ghanaian nationals living in the country.
After three months, with the situation relatively stabilized, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has confirmed that the embassy will now resume full operations.
Mr. Ablakwa emphasized that the evacuation of 17 citizens during the crisis highlighted Ghana’s ability to act swiftly in protecting its people.
“This operation is another testament of our capacity for rapid response in times of global uncertainty. It reinforces the importance of maintaining strong diplomatic networks and proactive contingency planning,” he added.
The Foreign Affairs Ministry, he assured, remains vigilant in monitoring global developments and will continue to act decisively whenever the safety of Ghanaian citizens and foreign service officials is at risk.
