Ayawaso Zongo Chiefs warn against annulment of NDC primary, back Baba Jamal

The Ayawaso Council of Zongo Chiefs has warned of possible unrest if the National Democratic Congress (NDC) annuls the outcome of the February 7 Ayawaso East parliamentary primary.

The caution follows calls by the Majority Caucus in Parliament for the election to be nullified. The primary was won by former High Commissioner to Nigeria, Baba Jamal, but the process has since been marred by allegations of vote buying.

Mr. Jamal has strongly denied the claims, including accusations that he distributed television sets and offered inducements to delegates during the election.

In response to the controversy, the NDC has constituted a committee to investigate the allegations and determine the way forward.

Addressing journalists on Monday, February 9, the Ayawaso Council of Zongo Chiefs urged the party’s leadership to respect what they describe as the will of the delegates. They also called on the party to support Baba Jamal, insisting that he was duly elected through a credible process.

“We, the chiefs, are deeply grateful that the campaign period and the election have ended peacefully. We give thanks to Almighty Allah for making this possible. All the contestants are our brothers and sisters. We hold them in high regard and love them dearly.

In every election, not everyone can emerge victorious. Honorable Baba Jamal has won the election, and we, the chiefs, warmly congratulate him on his victory. May Almighty Allah guide, protect, and bless him in his service.

We appeal to everyone to offer their support not only to the winner but also to those who did not win, because they are all our own. There are no differences among us – we remain one people.

Now that Baba Jamal has emerged victorious, we are committed to working together with him toward a common goal: uniting the people of Nima, keeping Nima clean, ensuring our streets are tidy, and maintaining clean gutters and surroundings for the health and well-being of all. Together, we can build a better and more united community.”
