Ghana has officially declared every Wednesday as a day to wear Fugu (Batakari), the iconic hand-woven smock.
The initiative by the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts aims to preserve national heritage, affirm Ghanaian identity, and support local artisans, weavers, designers, and traders across the creative economy.
The move comes after President John Dramani Mahama’s visit to Zambia, where he wore Fugu at official events. The outfit drew attention when Zambian social media users referred to it as a “blouse,” prompting a strong reaction from Ghanaians online.
The incident even led Zambia’s President Hakainde Hichilema to announcing plans to order more fugu from Ghana.
In a further boost to cultural trade, Ghana and Zambia have partnered to host a Kente and Fugu trade exhibition in Zambia this March, aimed at promoting Ghanaian textiles, creating new business opportunities, and strengthening economic and cultural ties between the two countries.
The government says the weekly observance will strengthen national unity, project Ghana’s heritage globally, and create new business and employment opportunities for local creatives.
