The Chief Justice, Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, has described the 150th anniversary of the Supreme Court of Ghana as a defining moment for reform, stressing that the milestone must go beyond ceremony to drive meaningful transformation within the judiciary.

Speaking at the official launch of the anniversary in Accra on Thursday, April 16, 2026, he said the occasion presents an opportunity for honest reflection and renewed commitment to improving justice delivery.

“This anniversary is more than a milestone. It is a moment for honest reflection, quiet gratitude, and bold hope,” he stated, emphasising that the celebration should not be limited to commemorating history but should instead serve as a catalyst for change.

“This anniversary must therefore be remembered as a commitment: to faster justice, to accessible justice, to transparent justice,” he added, outlining the direction for the future of the judiciary.

He noted that while the Court’s 150-year history is significant, its true value lies in how it responds to present challenges and prepares for the future. “History will not judge us by how long the Court has existed. It will judge us by what we did with the moment entrusted to us,” he said.

The Chief Justice acknowledged ongoing challenges within the justice system, including delays and barriers to access, stressing that the anniversary should mark a shift toward addressing these issues decisively.

“This anniversary is not only commemoration; it is a turning point and a mandate,” he declared, further noting that institutions must evolve to remain effective. “Longevity, without renewal, is a quiet form of decline,” he added.

The anniversary, themed “Honouring the Past, Celebrating the Present, and Defining the Future,” will feature a series of activities aimed at engaging the public and strengthening the justice system, including legal aid outreach, public lectures, and other initiatives.

The Chief Justice urged stakeholders to embrace the moment as an opportunity to build a more efficient, accessible, and trusted judiciary for the future.
