France laid down an early marker at the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a commanding 3-1 victory over Senegal in their Group I opener, powered by a brilliant brace from Kylian Mbappé.

The French captain once again proved why he remains one of football’s biggest stars, scoring twice as Didier Deschamps’ side overcame a spirited Senegalese challenge to begin their campaign with maximum points.

France scored in the second half after a keenly contested first half that saw Senegal goalkeeper, Mendy making some great saves to keep the score goalless. France were rewarded for their constant pressure when Michael Olise produced a moment of quality to set up the opening goal.

Substitute Bradley Barcola scored 2 minutes after coming on to replace teammate Osumane Dembele.
Senegal responded with determination and found a way back into the contest although it was a late rally. France’s superior quality eventually told as Mbappé struck to put the game beyond doubt and secure a convincing 3-1 win.

Olise was instrumental throughout the encounter, providing two assists and constantly troubling the Senegal defence with his creativity and movement. The Bayern Munich winger’s influence ensured France maintained control whenever Senegal threatened to build momentum.

The victory also brought Mbappé closer to one of the greatest records in World Cup history. His two goals take him to 14 World Cup goals, leaving him just two shy of the all-time record of 16 set by German legend Miroslav Klose. At only 27 years old, Mbappé appears well positioned to eclipse the mark before the tournament concludes.

For France, the result sends a powerful message to the rest of the field. Les Bleus arrived in North America among the favourites and their opening performance showcased the depth, attacking quality and experience that make them one of the teams to beat. With Mbappé in scintillating form and Olise pulling the strings, France look ready for another deep World Cup run.

Group I looks interesting as Norway produced an equally impressive display, defeating Iraq 4-1 to move to the top of the standings on goal difference. The Norwegians’ four-goal haul gives them a superior goal difference over France, setting up a potentially decisive showdown between the two European nations later in the group stage.

Group I Standings

  1. Norway – 3 pts (+3)
  2. France – 3 pts (+2)
  3. Senegal – 0 pts (-2)
  4. Iraq – 0 pts (-3)

France will next face Iraq looking to strengthen their grip on qualification, while Senegal face a must-win clash against Norway as they seek to revive their hopes of reaching the knockout rounds.
