Ghana’s Banking Sector Remains Strong and Well-Capitalised, with Capital Adequacy of 20.4%, Well Above the 13% Statutory Minimum” — World Bank

Ghana’s banking sector continues to strengthen, with improvements in capital, profitability and asset quality reinforcing the stability and resilience of the country’s financial system.

In its 10th Ghana Economic Update, released in August 2026, the World Bank highlights the strong capital position of Ghanaian banks. By June 2026, the banking sector’s Capital Adequacy Ratio stood at 20.4%, significantly above the statutory minimum of 13%. This provides banks with a strong buffer to absorb potential shocks while maintaining their capacity to support economic activity.

The improvement extends across other key indicators. Total banking-sector assets grew by 30.7% to GH¢502.4 billion, while profit after tax increased by 22.9% year-on-year in the first half of 2026. Together, these indicators point to a banking industry that is expanding while strengthening its underlying financial position.

Asset quality has also improved considerably. The non-performing loan ratio declined from 23.1% in June 2025 to 16.1% in June 2026, marking significant progress in addressing one of the key vulnerabilities within the banking system.

These gains come as the Bank of Ghana, under Governor Dr. Johnson Pandit Asiama, continues to strengthen supervision and safeguard financial-sector stability. Strong capital buffers, improving asset quality and sustained profitability are important to maintaining public confidence and ensuring that banks remain resilient in the face of potential economic and financial shocks.

The benefits of a stable financial system extend beyond the banks themselves. For households and businesses, stronger and more resilient banks provide greater confidence in savings and transactions and create a stronger foundation for sustainable credit to businesses, investment and productive economic activity.

The World Bank’s assessment provides further evidence that Ghana’s broader economic stabilisation is being accompanied by a strengthening financial system. Sustained regulatory vigilance, prudent risk management and effective supervision will remain important to consolidate these gains and ensure that the banking sector continues to support Ghana’s economic recovery and long-term growth.
