Mr Awentami Paul Afoko has thrown his weight behind Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia for the 2028 presidential election, saying he will keep working in the background to help the New Patriotic Party (NPP) win.
In a statement issued after the party’s national executive elections, Mr. Afoko said he will continue to work in the background, as he did in the past, in support of the party’s presidential candidate towards victory in 2028.
He then called on party members to stay strong and rally behind the newly elected executives, to ensure that Dr. Bawumia is elected President in 2028.
Mr. Afoko, who contested the party’s national chairmanship, said he was unable to deliver the victory his supporters were expecting. He said that was not for lack of effort, and that although he came with a message of the 3Rs, Reunite, Rebuild and Recapture Power, the delegates “preferred otherwise.”
Even so, he said he hopes and prays that the endorsed vision of the new executives will bring the party the needed power in 2028.
Mr. Afoko, a former National Chairman, thanked his campaign team for their sacrifices during the difficult moments of the campaign, and his loyal supporters for believing in his vision. He said he will meet the campaign team shortly for a debriefing, and will go around to thank his supporters personally.
He also thanked all the contestants, especially the victors, and the EC and the national election committee for what he called a smooth and uneventful election.
