Acting Rent Commissioner Frederick Opoku is predicting a major transformation in Ghana’s housing sector under the leadership of the new Works, Housing and Water Resource Minister Ahmed Ibrahim
Speaking to Isaac Addae on Morning Starr on Starr FM, Mr Opoku said his interactions with the minister over the past three days have convinced him that the Housing Ministry is set for significant changes in the coming years.
“Looking at my caliber and the caliber of the new minister, I’m telling you, there’s going to be a revolution in the housing sector,” he said.
Mr Opoku described the new minister as “solid” and said he believes President John Mahama made the right decision with the appointment.
He said the minister has demonstrated a willingness to confront the challenges confronting the sector openly rather than attempting to conceal them.
“He has proven his worth. Somebody who comes to office, open up, what are the challenges? No cover. It is not about the MPP. It’s about housing,” Mr Opoku said.
According to him, the new minister’s approach, coupled with the support of the Rent Control Department, could significantly improve the housing sector.
He explained that Rent Control serves as an important interface between landlords and tenants, making the department a critical component of efforts to improve the housing sector.
“I am the interface between the landlord and the tenant,” he said, adding that the Rent Control Department would support the minister’s efforts to improve housing infrastructure.
Mr Opoku further predicted that the Housing Ministry could emerge as a “powerhouse” within government as the administration works to transform the sector.
“You’re going to see a new Housing Ministry. A powerhouse of the government,” he said.
He expressed confidence that the changes being initiated by the new minister would lead to a significant transformation of Ghana’s housing sector.
