Asante Kotoko have progressed to the next round of the CAF Confederation Cup after a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Nigeria’s Kwara United in Abeokuta on Sunday.
The Porcupine Warriors entered the return leg with a narrow advantage following their 4-3 triumph in the first leg in Kumasi.
In Nigeria, Kotoko showcased discipline and composure, with forward Hubert Gyau netting the all-important goal to seal a 5-3 aggregate success.
The result sets up an enticing clash against Moroccan heavyweights Wydad Casablanca in the upcoming round.
Kwara United, who relocated the tie from their Ilorin Sports Stadium to the MKO Abiola Stadium due to renovation works, threw open the gates to attract home support. Despite the charged atmosphere, they could not unlock Kotoko’s resolute defense.
The win also bolsters head coach Karim Zito’s impressive record on the continent, with the experienced tactician now unbeaten in eight consecutive away fixtures in the CAF Confederation Cup.
