The Minister for Finance, Dr Cassiel Ato Baah Forson, has reportedly granted financial clearance for major construction works on the Samenya–New Town road in the Jomoro Municipality of the Western Region, alongside the rehabilitation of the Ankobra Bridge.
The financial clearance marks a key step towards the implementation of the two infrastructure projects, which are expected to improve road connectivity, ease transportation challenges and support economic activities in the municipality and surrounding communities.
The 25-kilometre Samenya–New Town road links Samenye Barrier through Half-Assini to New Town at the Côte d’Ivoire border.
The road has been a major concern for residents, motorists, traders and other road users due to its poor condition, with the Member of Parliament for Jomoro, Dorcas Affo-Toofey, chiefs and other stakeholders calling for improvements.
The planned construction is expected to ease movement along the stretch, improve access to essential services and facilitate the transportation of goods and people within Jomoro and neighbouring communities.
The rehabilitation of the Ankobra Bridge is also expected to address concerns over its deteriorating condition and improve the safety and efficiency of movement for commuters and commercial transport operators who rely on the route.
The two projects are particularly important to communities whose livelihoods depend on farming, fishing, trading and other economic activities that require reliable road infrastructure.
In July 2026, residents appealed for urgent improvements to the municipality’s road network, citing the effects of poor roads on transportation, access to healthcare and economic activities.
The Ankobra Bridge also attracted public concern in August 2026, when residents called for urgent rehabilitation, warning that its condition posed a potential danger to road users.
With the financial clearance reportedly secured, attention is expected to shift to the next stages of implementation, subject to the relevant procurement, contractual and administrative requirements.
However, the specific amount approved, the official commencement date for the road construction and the timeline for the bridge rehabilitation have not been confirmed.
The timely execution of the projects is expected to improve connectivity, support local businesses and address longstanding transportation challenges in the Jomoro Municipality.
