‘You’re now the hope of Ablekuma North’ – Bagbin to Aubynn as youngest MP

Speaker Bagbin urges newly sworn-in MP Ewurabena Aubynn to uphold the trust of her constituents after a historic by-election victory.

Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has urged the newly sworn-in Member of Parliament for Ablekuma North, Ewurabena Aubynn, to embrace her new role with humility, diligence, and a deep sense of responsibility, describing her as the “hope of the people” in her constituency.

Addressing the young legislator after administering her oath of office on Tuesday, July 22, 2025, Speaker Bagbin congratulated Aubynn on becoming the youngest MP of the 9th Parliament and offered words of counsel as she embarks on her political journey.

“I congratulate you on being the youngest MP,” he said. “I urge you to be punctual, ever present in Parliament, be calm, listen more, learn from your colleagues—but please read everything, not only the Constitution and the Standing Orders.”

More pointedly, the Speaker reminded her of the weight of the expectations now resting on her shoulders.

“You are now the hope of the people in the constituency. They are looking up to you to improve their lives. It is a trust, and this I pray you don’t abuse. Four years is just a day. You will go back to them, and they will assess you this time based on your performance. So please don’t be misled by any person. You fought the battle; others only supported you.”

Ewurabena Aubynn, representing the National Democratic Congress (NDC), was officially sworn in despite a walkout staged by the Minority in Parliament just moments before the ceremony.

The protest was triggered by Minority Chief Whip Frank Annoh-Dompreh’s request to speak before the oath was administered—an appeal rejected by the Speaker, prompting the Minority to exit the chamber in protest.

Nevertheless, the swearing-in went ahead, marking a historic moment not just for the young MP but also for the NDC. Aubynn’s narrow victory in the July 11 rerun—securing 34,090 votes to edge past the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Nana Akua Afriyie, who garnered 33,881—broke the NPP’s longstanding hold on the Ablekuma North seat.

Her win, by a slim margin of just 209 votes across all 281 polling stations, was a significant political upset and a symbolic gain for the opposition party.
