Beyond Burns International donates to Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital’s Burns Centre

Beyond Burns International, a dedicated non-profit organization committed to advocating for and supporting burn victims in Ghana and across Africa, made a significant donation to the Reconstructive Plastic Surgery and Burns Centre of the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital last Sunday.

This donation, which included cash and essential items for patient treatment, is part of the organization’s ongoing efforts to improve the quality of life for individuals and families affected by burns.

The executive director of Beyond Burns International, Mrs. Judith Cato Addison, who is also a burn survivor, emphasized the organization’s mission to provide comprehensive care, education, and sustainable support systems. “Our mission is to improve the quality of life for individuals and families affected by burns through comprehensive care, education, and sustainable support systems,” she stated.

Burn injuries are a critical public health issue in Africa, with limited access to medical care and a lack of awareness about burn prevention and treatment significantly impacting recovery outcomes. In Ghana alone, thousands suffer from severe burns each year, with many lacking the resources necessary for medical attention and rehabilitation.

Beyond Burns International is dedicated to addressing these challenges through various initiatives. The organization’s initiatives include providing medical assistance, raising awareness about burn prevention and treatment, and offering psychological support and counseling for burn victims, their families, and communities.

By collaborating with local and international partners, Beyond Burns International ensures the sustainability and expansion of its programmes.

The recent donation to the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital’s Burns Centre is a testament to Beyond Burns International’s commitment. According to Madam Sarfoa Ompong, the deputy chief nursing officer of the Burns Unit, “the donation is greatly appreciated as the donated items are critically needed to aid in the treatment of burn patients.”

She highlighted the continuous need for such support, noting that many patients cannot afford the necessary treatment.

Madam Ompong also addressed the underlying causes of burn cases seen in her department and emphasized the importance of community education on burn prevention and offered to provide educational sessions to citizens whenever called upon.

Her appeal for further support from well-wishers underscores the ongoing need for community involvement in helping burn victims. At Beyond Burns International, the belief that every burn victim deserves access to quality medical care and support, regardless of their socio-economic status, drives their mission. Mrs. Cato reiterated this commitment, stating, “We are driven by the belief that every burn victim deserves access to quality medical care and support, and a right to live a dignified and full life beyond the trauma and physical scars left behind by burns.

She called on the public to join them in their vital mission; whether through partnerships, donations, or volunteer efforts, to make a significant difference in the lives of those affected by burns.
