Ghana’s Black Queens got their 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) campaign off to a winning start with a 2-0 victory over tournament newcomers Cape Verde in their Group D opening match at the Moulay Rachid Stadium in Casablanca, Morocco.
The Black Queens made a fast start, with Doris Boaduwaa scoring in the sixth minute to give Ghana an early lead. Coach Kim Lars Björkegren’s team controlled most of the game, enjoyed more possession, and created several chances while keeping the Cape Verde defence under pressure in the first half.
Ghana made it 2-0 nine minutes into the second half when Cape Verde defender Eleia Vieira accidentally turned the ball into her own net after another dangerous attack from the Black Queens. The own goal gave Ghana a comfortable lead.
With the two-goal advantage, Ghana stayed in control for the rest of the match. Cape Verde, playing in their first-ever WAFCON tournament, found it difficult to create clear scoring chances against Ghana’s well-organised defence. The Black Queens deserved the win after a strong performance.
The victory gives Ghana a positive start in Group D as they aim to reach the knockout stage. Cape Verde, meanwhile, will look to recover in their next match after a difficult first game at Africa’s biggest women’s football tournament.
